This course is intended to provide the “already qualified” seafarer instruction and training in assessment techniques of competency, as well as appropriate guidance in assessment methods and practices. As stated, the person(s) enrolling in this course will already possess an appropriate level of knowledge, understanding and proficiency (KUP) of the competence he/she will be assessing of others. Each participant successfully completing this course will be able to: Apply the international and national requirements concerning the training and assessment of officers and ratings on merchant vessels/platforms. Determine and verify effective assessment procedures and methods. Organize and administer, i.e. conduct, assessments to those requiring such. This class is for any applicant who presents evidence of 1 year of sea time within the past 5 years. This class runs in conjunction with Basic Training Revalidation and allows mariners to complete both courses in the same two days. Day 1 is Part I of Basic Training and Part I of Advanced Fire Fighting; Day 2 is Part II of Basic Training and Part II of Advanced Fire Fighting. Mariners can choose to do just one or take both of them together. This course is open to all seafarers who have previously been certified in Basic Training and are capable of meeting the physical and professional eligibility requirements for STCW certification, and have at least entry level mariner documents from USCG or a foreign flag state whose mariner credentialing organization will accept USCG documents, and have one year of sea time in the last five years and need to renew their endorsement for Basic Training. The course covers all the competencies of Ocean Survival and Basic Fire Fighting. Please bring an extra set of clothes as you will get wet in the Academy’s indoor pool. This course is intended for individuals who have never completed Personal Survival Techniques in the past.  This course is conducted in both the classroom and pool.  Course covers the following: emergency situations, evacuation, survival craft, personal life saving equipment, and survival at sea.  There is a written exam for theory and practical assessments are assessed at the Academy’s indoor pool by the instructor.

USCG Approval:

Applicants who successfully complete our Personal Survival Techniques course will satisfy the Personal Survival Techniques training competency requirements of STCW Code Section A- VI/1  and 46 CFR 11.302(a)(1) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(1).
