This blended USCG approved course meets the STCW mandatory minimum requirements for training and qualification of masters and officers on board ships operating in polar waters.

Part 1: The online coursework is delivered through Instructure’s Canvas, a web-based learning management system which allows you to work at your own pace.
Each section of the course will have an online assessment which must be passed prior to advancing to the next section. Completion of the online modules is a prerequisite for attending the assessment day; however, you may register to take the assessment at any point after starting the course.

Part 2: Once the online portion is successfully completed students must report to Maine Maritime Academy to complete a required three-day practical and written final examinations. A certificate will be awarded when both portions are successfully completed.

USCG Approval:
This course meets the Certification requirements for Basic Polar Code Operations and satisfies the training requirement and standard of competence of Section A-V/4, table A-V/4-1, of the STCW Code as amended for Basic Polar Code Operations.

This course is offered fully online (no on-campus requirements).

This course is intended to provide the “already qualified” seafarer instruction and training in assessment techniques of competency, as well as appropriate guidance in assessment methods and practices.

Student's will already possess an appropriate level of knowledge, understanding and proficiency (KUP) of the competence he/she will be assessing of others. Each participant successfully completing this course will be able to:
Apply the international and national requirements concerning the training and assessment of officers and ratings on merchant Organizevessels/platforms.
Determine and verify effective assessment procedures and methods, and administer, assessments to those requiring such.

USCG Approval: This course meets the training requirements of 46 CFR 10.405(a)(1) and 46 CFR 10.405(d) as well as STCW Code Section A-I/6 paragraphs 3 and 6. All assessments must be signed by a qualified assessor approved by the Coast Guard in accordance with 46 CFR 10.405.
This course meets the requirements of The Qualified Assessor fundamentals as outlined as a requirement in USCG NVIC 19-14.

This lecture is designed to reduce a student’s required time on campus when completing their certification. Students are required to finish the hands-on portions of the course on MMA’s campus before October 31, 2020.

This course is open to all seafarers who meet each of the following criteria:
• Previously been certified in Basic Training and are capable of meeting the physical and professional eligibility requirements for STCW certification
• At least entry level mariner documents from USCG or a foreign flag state whose mariner credentialing organization will accept USCG documents
• Do not have one year of sea time in the last five years and need to renew their endorsement for Basic Training.

The course covers all the competencies of Personal Survival Techniques, Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities, Fire Fighting, and First Aid & CPR renewal.

This course is designed to develop a fundamental understanding of the shipboard systems associated with the design and safe operations of inert gas and crude oil wash systems aboard tankers. The objectives will introduce students to the science, design, and safety features of the IGS/COW systems, based on Solas Regulation 62 or FFS chapter 15 guidelines. The course will explain the discipline, mechanics, operational procedures, and regulations applicable to the various IGS/COW systems, as well as providing an understanding of the locations and functions of those system components. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the systems using the Transas Dangerous Liquid Cargo simulator and the OSG 350 tanker simulator. At the conclusion of this course students will be able to successfully operate, maintain, and inspect the IGS/COW systems. USCG Approval: Applicants who successfully complete our Inert Gas Systems / Crude Oil Washing course will satisfy the crude oil washing operations training requirement of 33 CFR 157.152(c)(2). More
