Course Description
This course will provide the knowledge required to enable personnel without designated security duties in connection with a Ship Security Plan (SSP) to enhance ship security in accordance with the requirements of Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS 74 as amended, the ISPS Code, and Section A-VI/6-1 and Table A-VI/6-1 of the STCW Code, as amended.

Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act requires persons who work with or purchase regulated refrigerants for stationary equipment to become certified through a closed book exam. 


The certification types are defined as follows:

TypeI: Required for servicing small appliances
TypeII: Required for servicing or disposing of high‐pressure appliances, except small appliances and MVACs
TypeIII: Required for servicing or disposing of low‐pressure appliances
Universal: Earned when a candidate successfully passes all four sections of the exam.

Candidates must pass the Core section of the exam along with one or more of the Types to earn the certification.

This blended USCG approved course This Chief Mate to Master course will provide students with practical theory and understanding of ship handling in various maneuvering situations encountered while navigating a vessel. Students will apply online instruction and lecture material to practical simulator exercises designed to meet the assessment standards of this course.



USCG Approval:

Those who successfully complete this Advanced Shiphandling (MEMACE-22) course will satisfy the training requirements detailed in the following regulatory codes and standards:

46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(i) endorsement as master and 11.307(a)(3)(i) for STCW endorsements as chief mate on vessels of 3,000 GT or more and
46 CFR 11.311(a)(3)(i) endorsement as master and 11.313(a)(3)(i) endorsement as chief mate for STCW Code, as amended 2010, on vessels of more than 500 GT and less than 3,000 GT.
In addition, students will also achieve the advanced ship handling standards of competence required by

46 CFR 11.305(a)(2), 11.307(a)(2), 11.311(a)(2), 11.313(a)(2), and 11.315(a)(2)

Register here for your online coursework. This course begins with online coursework followed by an in-person assessment.

This blended USCG approved course meets the STCW mandatory minimum requirements for training and qualification of masters and officers on board ships operating in polar waters.

Part 1: The online coursework is delivered through Instructure’s Canvas, a web-based learning management system which allows you to work at your own pace.
Each section of the course will have an online assessment which must be passed prior to advancing to the next section. Completion of the online modules is a prerequisite for attending the assessment day; however, you may register to take the assessment at any point after starting the course.

Part 2: Once the online portion is successfully completed students must report to Maine Maritime Academy to complete a required three-day practical and written final examinations. A certificate will be awarded when both portions are successfully completed.

USCG Approval:
This course meets the Certification requirements for Basic Polar Code Operations and satisfies the training requirement and standard of competence of Section A-V/4, table A-V/4-1, of the STCW Code as amended for Basic Polar Code Operations.
